Nicolas Cage is being cast as DC Comics villain Bizarro, who would have been a central figure in Kevin Smith’s episode of HBO Max’s canceled Strange Adventures. While Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti has launched several DC TV shows on The CW and HBO Max, one of them is not moving forward. After announcing its development in October 2019, it was confirmed in 2022 that HBO Max’s Strange Adventures series was cancelled, while Berlanti’s other DC drama, Green Lanternstill moving forward.
Strange Adventures was to be the first DC anthology series where each episode had its own standalone stories and characters each week. While HBO Max scrapped it, filmmaker and podcaster Smith revealed he was tapped to direct and co-write an episode with Super girl writes Eric Carrasco. Their Strange Adventures episode would have been Bizarro-centric, following a new version of the iconic Superman villain as he kidnaps Jimmy Olsen and Perry White, who are taken to Bizarro World. While they never signed him up for the episode, Smith confirmed it Strange Adventures saw Cage as Bizarro. Along with Cage, Strange Adventures looked to press Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña – before he was cast as Blue Beetle – for Jimmy, while he had Harrison Ford and John Goodman in mind for Perry.
While Cage may never get to play Bizarro in live-action, a talented fan artist gave the world an idea of what he might have looked like as the DC character. Spdrmnkyxxiii recreated the iconic actor as Bizarro for Smith’s Strange Adventures episode where Cage’s Bizarro looks absolutely terrifying. Check out Spdrmnkyxxiii’s amazing artwork below.
Bizarro on Strange Adventures wouldn’t be the first time Cage was considered for a major DC role. In 1996, Smith was hired to write a script for a new Superman movie, notoriously known as Superman lives, which would have rebooted the franchise. Director Tim Burton boarded the project, with Cage actually being cast as the Man of Steel. Smith’s first script was inspired by The Death and Return of Superman and went through several rewrites when Burton was attached to the film. But due to the many behind-the-scenes and creative conflicts with the studio, Warner Bros. cancelled. Superman lives in 1998. While Cage never got to play Superman or Bizarro, he got his foot into the superhero genre through Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versewhere he voiced Spider-Man Noir.
Strange Adventures, overall could have been a fascinating show, especially after Smtih revealed the details of his and Carrasco’s episode. So far, no other writers involved in the project have come forward to share information about their respective episodes. While several DC TV shows are currently airing, Strange Adventures would have been the first time Warner Bros. had created an anthology series that allows creators to explore different corners of the DC Universe. While the actor’s reps confirmed exclusively to Screen Rant that Cage playing Bizarro was never an official deal, the idea of him playing that character would have been interesting, especially with Smith and Carrasco going with him in their episode. Despite Strange Adventures never going forward, hopefully there will be a time when Cage gets to dip his toe into the DC Universe through another movie or HBO Max show.
