Kelly’s Hotel in Cranbourne, Melbourne hits back at outrage over posts about Queen’s death

A popular Melbourne pub has hit back with massive backlash over several “tasteless” social media posts making light of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The general manager of Kelly’s Hotel in Cranbourne was shocked by the outrage that erupted.

Despite being inundated with death threats, Michael Goldie told Daily Mail Australia he has no regrets.

He insists that posts are only meant to remind younger generations to spend time with and appreciate older loved ones while they are still alive.

Most of the posts have been deleted, but not before sparking widespread outrage as in the past and potential patrons vowing to boycott the venue.

‘Ask lunch before they die. The options after are extremely limited,’ said a post with a photo of the late Queen with her grandson, Prince Harry.

Hours later, the venue posted another photo of the Queen alongside a photo of a distressed Harry after he failed to make it to Balmoral in time for his grandmother’s death.

‘Yes, he canceled lunch, time and time again,’ the post read.

“She’s staying until next week!” he said. ‘It’s not like it’s my mother’s mother,’ he said. But next week never came to Grandma Windsor. Make lunch with your old man!!’

Another post with a similar picture of Prince Harry read: ‘Another grandson inconsolable because he was too miserable to take his grandma out for lunch. Don’t let it be you.’

A fourth post of several costumed corgis, the Queen’s favorite dog breed, remains on the pub’s Instagram page.

‘No doubt in everyone’s mind, what about the Corgis! Some say they are traditionally buried with the Queen, others say not. I would like to believe in a higher calling’, it says.

The deleted posts also served to promote the pub and its takeaway and delivery services, sparking community outrage.

‘It’s time to ditch the quirky (and sometimes confused) humorous posts. Some of them haven’t even been funny and they aren’t even relevant or related to your business. The minute you go off the rails with polarizing views it becomes damaging,’ one customer commented on the pub’s Facebook page

It also spawned many one-star Google reviews vowing not to return

‘Tasteless food just like their Tasteless posts they do, disgusting behavior and hope you lose all your valuable customers who kept you all afloat. Won’t be going back,’ wrote one former regular patron.

Another reviewer wrote: ‘Complete disrespect for our Queen. Totally embarrassing. Will never eat here.’

General manager Michael Goldie admitted to Daily Mail Australia that the deleted posts about Prince Harry were “wrongly shared”, but stands by the message they intended to send.

He added similar posts about the importance of spending time with older loved ones shared long before the Queen died.

“I thought people would look at the posts as a reminder to call their grandparents and go visit them,” Mr. Goldie.

‘They had a valid point that Harry missed out on spending more time with his grandmother before she died.’

‘We’ve been encouraging everyone to take their grandparents out for lunch for a long time now.’

Goldie does not regret the offense the posts caused, despite the pub being flooded with threats.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion,” he said.

‘Everything we do is a learning experience. Would I post them again? Possibly, but I would probably do it differently.
