Dan Murphy’s and BWS are battling to recreate a key ingredient used to make Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite cocktail, as people raise a glass in memory of the British monarch.

Sales of Dubonnet Rouge, a French aperitif, rose 465 per cent at Australia’s biggest drinks retailer in the three days between Friday and Sunday compared to a typical seven-day trading week. The late Queen’s favorite cocktail is said to be two parts Dubonnet, one part gin, poured over ice with a twist of lemon.

“It is definitely an acquired taste. It’s predominantly a fortified liqueur with spices, so it’s quite niche, quite popular in Europe – obviously very popular with the Queen,” said Endeavor Group director of purchasing and merchandise Tim Carroll.

The $13 billion drinks group is stocking up on the liquor after several Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores ran out over the weekend.

“In less than half [a week] we sold almost double the Christmas, which clearly showed a significant increase on what we normally sell, and it was people clearly Googling and recognizing what the Queen’s favorite drink is and making it themselves,” Carroll said.

Aperitif is back in stock in most stores, but Endeavor expects demand for Dubonnet to remain higher than usual in the run up to next week’s National Day of Mourning to honor the Queen, who died on September 8.

“I know we’ll have more requests this weekend and just as much next week during her funeral, maybe.”

Across the country, Dan Murphy’s outlet in Sydney’s Double Bay achieved the highest overall sales of the liqueur and was still sold out on Tuesday night.
