Gordon Armstrong, a former football player, accused golfers. More precisely, he accused Lee Westwood. Armstrong compared Westwood’s departure from LIV Golf to match-fixing. However, Westwood immediately responded via Twitter, finding the Gordon comparison bizarre.
‘You’ve compared playing for another league to someone committing the crime of throwing football matches?’ he wrote on Twitter. ‘What a fantastic grasp of reality! I’m sure your employers will be thrilled to hear this logic.’
Many Twitter users responded, and one of them was specific. He believes that Westwood did not commit a criminal act, but that his action is not at all commendable considering the money he made during his career. “You’re right Lee, you haven’t committed an offence.
You’ve ruined your reputation though, and sometimes that should be worth more than money, especially since you weren’t exactly poor before.’
Lee Westwood and the Twitter War
Westwood disagrees with the majority, given that he felt a lot of support, especially in Wentworth.
Westwood replied: ‘The thousands of true golf fans who turned out to support Wentworth last weekend do not share your sentiments. Don’t get sucked into Twitter, media and propaganda that you are fed.’
Armstrong reiterated that most members of LIV Golf took a huge amount of money. This had a big impact on their reputation considering all they accomplished while playing on the PGA Tour : ‘You took a lot more money when you really don’t need it, which I never said was criminal, like Jon Rahm said you could never spend all your money, what I said was that it has completely destroyed your reputation as a legend of European golf’and he deleted his original tweet.
He said: “A little sorry if other footballers went too far.” Westwood eventually accepted an apology. Westwood replied: ‘Apology accepted.’
