Beloved naturalist Sir David Attenborough has just told a delightful anecdote about the Queen and the BBC’s Christmas broadcast.
Attenborough was involved in the production for nearly a decade.
“The first time I did it, I was very worried,” he said.
“And especially when I discovered that there was going to be a planning meeting that the Queen herself wanted to attend.”
During the meeting, the Queen asked what costume she should wear.
“What would you recommend? Would this do?” the Queen asked Attenborough.
Unbeknownst to the queen, they had just chosen the room where the broadcast was to take place.
“The problem was that her costume was green, but the room where we had to make it also had green wallpaper.
“So very concerned, it was my first time, I said, ‘Can we change it to another color?’
“And she said, ‘What’s wrong with that color?’ And I said, ‘No, it matches the wallpaper and I don’t think it would look good’.”
Another attendee asked about having the room renovated, but the Queen shut down that idea.
According to Attenborough, the Queen said: “Repapered! Do you have any idea what it’s going to cost?”
The meeting erupted in laughter, Attenborough said.
