Retired American tennis pro Chris Evert projected a certain calmness while on the tennis court, but the 67-year-old has revealed that this facade is far from her mood in real life.

In a recent podcast, the former world No. 1 spoke about how her personal life is completely different from her tennis image on the court. She began by saying that her ability to absorb pressure was a quality that only appeared when she was on the tennis court.

“I realized at a young age that my temperament, by being calm and cool on the court, by being present for every single point, and trying to win every single point, and having, you know, just a good mental beat by being strong mentally, I felt that was my strength in my game,” Evert revealed. “But believe me, in my personal life I’m a, you know, I’m a wreck.”

The 18-time Grand Slam titlist also used family upbringing as an example of a situation where she was not in complete control, as opposed to being on a tennis court.

“You raise kids and you go, what the heck, you know what, what do I do now, you know, my hands are in the air all the time,” Evert added. “So I think that was the only place I could control myself.”
