An anxious-looking Kate Middleton was photographed leaving Windsor alone last Thursday to pick up children Louis, Charlotte and George from school as the royal family tragedy unfolded.

The Duchess of Cambridge, looking strained, was photographed just hours before Queen Elizabeth’s death was announced.

She remained in England when her husband, Prince William, rushed to Scotland.

The 96-year-old monarch died at Balmoral, her Scottish summer residence, on Thursday local time.

Kate had a strong relationship with Queen Elizabeth and they were often pictured smiling and laughing together.

She once described Elizabeth as “very supportive” and a “loving grandmother” who was both thoughtful and caring.

“She has been very generous and not at all forceful in any of her views,” she once said of Her Majesty.

“I feel like she’s been kind of a gentle guide for me.”

Prince William also spoke to mourners about his deep sadness at his grandmother’s death when he addressed the crowds on September 10.

“We all thought she was invincible,” he said. “It’s been surreal”.

William and Kate were unexpectedly joined by Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, on a walk along the gates of Windsor Castle.

A crowd erupted into applause as the couples approached and addressed members of the public.

William was seen speaking intensely to a member of the crowd, at one point shaking a woman’s hand.

Both William and Kate, given the titles Prince and Princess of Wales, could be seen thanking people.

Kate crouched down for a moment and began to speak to a child who had begun to cry.

The child stopped crying when Kate approached her.

Meghan was also seen shaking hands with several children and well-wishers in Windsor.

Harry and Meghan were handed bouquets of flowers by the audience, which they both accepted.
