Sega has just released trailers for two new ones Yakuza upcoming games: Yakuza 8the next main game in the series (and one that we had already seen and known about), and Like a Dragon Gaiden, a brand new announcement starring the series’ Kazuma Kiryu. That makes this one three Yakuza announcements about a week for Sega, after yesterday’s revelation of Like a dragon: Was!

First up is Yakuza 8, which seems to have ditched having Ichiban as its lone star in favor of a joint adventure with Kiryu, the man no one can say goodbye to. Please note that Sega does not really use Yakuza name longer, this is officially called Like a dragon 8but it’s going to take some getting used to, so for now let’s just keep calling it Yakuza 8:

The eighth game in the main series will be released in 2024 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and pc. I…I don’t know how to process what they’ve done to Kiryu’s hair here, and to be honest, I don’t want to talk about it right now. Instead, let’s move on to the other Kiryu-related project that was showcased overnight, called Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name:

Now this is interesting. It doesn’t just fill in some narrative gaps and show us what Kiryu had been up to in between Yakuza 6 & 7, but it’s also specifically aimed at fans who preferred the older style of play (pre Yakuza 7’s jump to turn-based combat), with a heavy focus on action-based combat. The game is also said to be a smaller, more manageable affair that lacks the spread of the main line Yakuza game, so hopefully it comes in a little cheaper too.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will be released in 2023.
