Two young women have died after their car crashed into a lake in Perth’s north-east.

Police say the car was traveling south on Edgerton Road in Aveley on Sunday morning before turning right onto Gnangara Road and for unknown reasons continuing across the center strip and into a nearby lake.

Two 20-year-old women, the driver and the passenger, both died at the scene.

Inspector Craig Collins of the State Operations Command Division said the two women had been on their way to work.

He said there was no information yet on what might have caused the vehicle to veer into the water.

“It’s the early stages of the investigation, we don’t have anything other than we don’t believe there’s any other vehicle involved,” Inspector Collins said.

“I think there were people trying to help – unfortunately, because of the location, it was tragically very difficult.

“Our thoughts are with the families at this time.”

Major Crash investigators are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision to contact police.
