King Charles III has addressed the nation for the first time as a monarch.
He sat at a table with a photograph of his “beloved mother” placed to the right.
He said he was addressing the nation with “deep sadness” following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
He said his mother’s life was one “well lived” and a “promise with destiny kept”.
He committed to his mother’s own promise when she turned 21 to dedicate her life to her people.
“I know her death brings great sadness to so many of you and I share this sense of immeasurable loss with you all,” he said.
He spoke about the change in society since his mother ascended the throne and argued for monarchy in the modern age.
“Our values have remained and must remain constant,” he said.
“The role of the monarchy also remains,” he said, citing the Church of England as an example.
“My life will of course change as I take on my new responsibilities. It will no longer be possible for me to give so much of my time to the charities and issues that I care so much about,” he said.
His own family was also changing, and he said his “dear wife”, Camilla, would become Queen Consort.
His heir, Prince William, succeeds him as Duke of Cornwall and also takes on his Scottish titles, as well as Charles’ most famous title.
“Today I am proud to create him Prince of Wales,” he said, saying it was a privilege to hold the title.
“Our new Prince and Princess of Wales will continue to inspire and lead our national conversation, helping to bring the fringes to the center where vital help can be provided.
“I also want to express my love to Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives.”
His last words were “thank you, to my beloved mother, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late father.
“May flights of angels sing you to rest,” he concluded.
