The country plunged into mourning after the death of the queen.

The palace said in a statement: “The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

She was the first British queen in history to reach her platinum jubilee, and she died just three months after national festivities in June to mark 70 years on the throne.

Can schools be closed during mourning?
