Trevor Sinclair causes outrage with ‘disgusting’ tweet after Queen’s death | Football | Sport

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair sparked outrage on social media with a controversial tweet following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday. The nation’s longest-reigning monarch died at his Balmoral residence in Scotland surrounded by close members of the royal family, with Buckingham Palace confirming the news by issuing an official statement later Thursday evening.

Tributes have already poured in from across the sporting world, with many of football’s leading figures paying their respects on social media in the hours after the Queen’s death was announced. Sinclair managed to unleash fury with his own tweethowever, where he argued that racism was allowed to thrive during the Queen’s 70-year reign.

He wrote: “Racism was outlawed in England in the 60s and has been allowed to thrive, so why should black and brown mourn!”

Sinclair’s view was quickly met with a huge amount of backlash, with a large number of people criticizing the former Manchester City and West Ham United striker, who posted his tweet just hours after the Queen’s death.

@JulieHaslam didn’t mince her words in her response to Sinclair’s original tweet, saying: “Unbelievable. Disgusting. Unfollowed.”

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan was also shocked when he replied: “Trev, I’m really not sure that’s an appropriate thought, let alone tweet. The country has lost a very significant person and respect and value should be the overriding emotions not division!”

Jordan’s comments were echoed by @Ian_Tex_Greer, who added: “Status of this tweet. You can think what you want from the monarchy and choose not to mourn, that’s your choice, but why feel the need to tweet about it? “

@Cal_lung also challenged Sinclair’s point by replying: “As a man of color Trev you are completely out of order here. I actually think racism works both ways.

“Regarding this comment, this lady served this country in a way that will never be seen again. Slavery was abolished during her reign…remember the facts.”

@RickyMartin247 was another to be outraged by Sinclair’s controversial post, adding: “Absolute embarrassment of a tweet. Hold your head in shame and while you’re at it give the caps back to England because they said so. Leader clearly click bait at a time of national pain.”

A number of other responders called for Sinclair to be sacked from his role as a pundit on talkSPORT, while some pointed to the fact that he appeared to have sympathy for the Queen in 2020 when he tweeted that she was ‘genuine in humility’ and ‘still inspired’.

talkSPORT later revealed they were investigating the matter in a tweet that read: “We have attempted to contact Trevor Sinclair following statements made on his Twitter account. talkSPORT does not support these views and is investigating the matter.”
