“What I will say is that nothing illegal happened here,” Carey told reporters today.
He questioned why the police were not called to the premises after the white powder was discovered.
“(Crown) had two occasions to call the police and they should have been called immediately,” he said.
“If an illegal substance was taking place, they would have been called.”
Crown Resorts chief executive Ciaran Carruthers has disputed Carey’s version of events.
Carruthers told reporters that some of the statements made by Carey directly contradicted those of Crown team members.
Carey was gambling at the casino when a ziplock bag containing white powder fell out of his pocket last Thursday.
The 51-year-old said the powder was an anti-inflammatory medication used for pain relief.
The police were not called after the incident.
“Any such incident that our staff deems suspicious, reports it, de-escalates it, and in this case, our staff asked the customer to leave the facility,” Carruthers said.
Carey has previously claimed he offered to hand the bag over to Crown staff after dropping it.
But earlier today, speaking to 6PR, Carruthers dismissed Carey’s claim.
“I understand they didn’t know it was Mr Carey sitting at the table. It was a customer buying chips at the time,” he said.
“(The staff) noticed the package fell out with the notes and they advised their game manager.
“He kept it (the bag) and other than what happened, other than that I have no idea what happened to it.”
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanche yesterday told 6PR the casino should have informed officers of the incident at the time.
Carruthers said the one “lapse in procedure” was that staff did not call the police.
“The one mistake was that the authorities should have been notified immediately,” he said.
“This process has been changed with immediate effect. That change has already been made after a full review.”
